History of the hotel

The oldest still operating hotel in České Budějovice is closely connected with the city and its history.

For centuries, it has represented a fixed point in changing times and, regardless of the twists and turns of history,

it is synonymous with hospitality and first-class service.


1265

Přemysl Otakar II. establishes České Budějovice, Hirzo from Klingenberg draws a city plan including the main square. The first house is built on the site of today's hotel.

1533

The first mention of the house from which Hotel Zvon was created. Wolf Wiennar from Muran sells a house on the east side of the square to Jan Hank for 500 kopecks.

1669

Karl Kurzbeck buys the house and names it U tří bílých zvonků.

1826

František Palacký is staying in the house for the first time.

2nd half of the 19th century

The house undergoes a classicist reconstruction and the name is changed to Stříbrný zvon.

1948

After the communist coup, the hotel is nationalized, as well as the entire property of the Mikeš family. Jan Mikeš the younger emigrates, Jan Mikeš the elder dies two years later.

1973

The hotel is partially repaired and expanded again, this time with the Ausobský house, and has 49 rooms.

1991 — 1993

Jan Mikeš buys other adjacent houses and invests in extensive repairs. Since then, the hotel includes 8 originally separate houses.

2003 — 2009

Gradual total reconstruction and completion, after which the hotel already offers 80 rooms of apartments with 188 beds.

Charles IV. he has the old butcher shops and houses in the middle of the square demolished and orders it to be paved.

1663

An inn is documented in the house.

1698

Another owner - Andreas Habelsberger and another name - U Bílého zvonu.

1849

On his way to Linz, František Josef I. spends the night here for the first time.

1926

The house passes into the hands of the wealthy Budějovice sausage maker Jan Mikeš, and after extensive repairs it reopens under the name Hotel Zvon.

50s

The neighboring hotel U tří kohoutů is connected to the hotel Zvon, on the ground floor there is a so-called vending machine, i.e. a public dining room, and a milk bar.

1990

Jan Mikeš Jr., the son of the original owner and a successful businessman in the hotel and tourism industry, returns from exile in Canada.

2000

Jan Mikeš Jr. dies.
